Recommended personal equipment list for day-trips
This list may be modified to meet the demands of season and weather: Call Nénuphar. And, amend it to reflect your health needs if any. (A small dry-bag will be provided by Nénuphar Canoeing to stow mandatory safety gear, and you may use it for the following personal items; but its is recommended that, for these items, you create your own small ‘day-pack’ -- i.e. small back-pack or nylon sack or small dry bag-- to fit behind your seat, as part of your permanent canoeing gear, ready-to-go.)
- Clothing:
a) On-water
- Cap or hat and long-sleeved shirt,
- Splash pants or shorts (long-legged pants, other than blue jeans, are best against sun, mosquitoes, and the unpredictable Fundy fog), over a bathing suit if you wish.
- Bring a spare warm shirt or fleece (placed in plastic or in the dry bag) unless the day is guaranteed warm and fog-free
b) On the shore:
- For formal CRCA certification classes, getting wet may be required for the “canoe-over-canoe rescue”: Have a change of warm dry clothes at hand on-shore for after-class. In the spring or fall, this means fleece or polypropylene, or wool.
- Protection:
- Sun block (lotion) and sunglasses;
- Mosquito repellent;
- Rain resistant windbreaker or light shell. Bring it, if nothing else!
- Personal medications or allergy drugs (ensure that the trip leader is made aware of life-threatening allergies.)
- A resealable freezer bag is handy for keys, medicines, toilet paper, etc
- Sustenance:
- One litre of water per four hours planned on-water;
- Whatever lunch or energy bars you will need on day-trips (Gibson Creek will provide trail mix for mid-morning and mid-afternoon snacks. The instruction classes are a fair workout… you will need energy for daylong events. Check to see if we will stop for breaks near restaurants.)
- Mandatory Safety Gear:
Gibson Creek boats will be outfitted with the following gear required by law. Your own boat must be too, if you use it:
- Coast-guard-approved PFD’s
- 15 metre buoyant throw-rope
- Bailer
- One paddle per person (and if you paddle alone, have a spare),
- Whistle or equivalent
- A light (in each canoe) only if you plan to do night paddling
